Breast Health Center
The UC Davis Breast Health Center offers comprehensive breast health services for women throughout the region. Women now have quick access to a cohesive, multidisciplinary team of breast health experts. The center offers leading-edge imaging technologies with rapid delivery of results, cancer prevention strategies, genetic counseling and cancer risk assessment and specialty physician patient care, as needed.
The UC Davis breast imaging department, recognized by the American College of Radiology as a Center of Excellence, provides comprehensive, leading-edge services for screening, diagnosis and follow-up of breast abnormalities.
Asymptomatic normal-risk women can be screened for breast cancer with standard 2-D mammography. 3-D mammography (tomosynthesis) also is offered. Those at high risk for breast cancer may also undergo screening breast MR (magnetic resonance).
For diagnosis of breast abnormalities in symptomatic patients or patients having abnormal screening studies, the Breast Health Center offers tailored diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MR, sonographically guided, stereotactic and MR-guided breast biopsy, as well as localization of occult lesions in preparation for surgical removal.
Opportunities to participate in research studies in breast imaging, including protocols examining dedicated breast CT and tomosynthesis, are also available to eligible patients.
Patients who choose UC Davis for their breast health services may be referred for a breast cancer risk assessment with a genetic counselor. Genetic counselors see patients with a family history of breast cancer and/or personal history of other cancers.
The genetic counselor will review the patient's health and family history of cancer to determine whether there is an elevated risk of cancer and if genetic testing for hereditary cancer is indicated. The genetic counselor will discuss the implications of test results and medical management options and provide ongoing support.
Our genetic counselors have graduate-level training in medical genetics and are an integral part of the Breast Health Center team.
When women choose the UC Davis Breast Health Center they are choosing the expertise and experience of an academic medical center. At UC Davis, physicians and scientists work together to enhance overall health and improve patient outcomes through innovation in prevention, diagnosis and treatment and support services.
The Breast Health Clinic in the Ambulatory Care Center on the health system campus is staffed by physicians all day, Monday through Thursday. Breast Health Clinic physicians provide consultation on patients with new breast lumps and other concerning breast symptoms by clinician referral. Patients deemed at elevated risk for developing breast cancer are followed and managed by the Breast Health Clinic physicians.
UC Davis is home one of the nation’s leading cancer centers, the National Cancer Institute-designated UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, which serves both adults and children.
