Child Psychiatry Resident Training Program
Objectives
- Understand the mental health diagnostic and treatment needs of abused and neglected children
- Understand how the Sacramento County System of Care and the treatment modalities of individual, group, family, and PCIT therapy are utilized in the treatment of abused and neglected children
- Develop an understanding of the interface between psychiatric consultation and a child abuse mental health treatment program
- Understand roles of the legal, educational, and child protective agencies in the provision of services to abused and neglected children
- Understand the medical diagnostic and intervention modalities used in the evaluation of abused and neglected children, e.g. evidentiary exams, medical clearance exams, foster care comprehensive exams, child abduction exams
- Understand the various roles of public and private agencies in child abuse intervention
Training Program Plan
- Observation of psychiatric assessments, medication evaluations and management, and case discussions and review correspond to #1 above
- Observation of PCIT and collaborative care involving mental health team and the psychiatrist and didactic presentations by the psychiatrist and other mental health clinicians correspond to #2 above
- Observation of psychiatric assessments, medication evaluations and management, collaborative treatment, and consultation involving the mental health clinicians and staff corresponds to #3 above
- Observation and discussion of the roles and responsibilities of the Sacramento Child Advocates, Special Education Services, Child Protective Services in the court as they relate to the needs of abused and neglected children correspond to #4 above
- Observation of evidentiary and follow-up pediatric examinations, medical clearance exams, and foster care evaluations correspond to #5 above
- Observation and discussion of individual cases involving the involvement of multiple agencies correspond to #6 above.
