CHAT — Counseling for Trauma Recovery with Children

The CAARE Center provides short-term (120-day) crisis counseling for children who have recently experienced, witnessed, or disclosed trauma or abuse. In order to lessen the behavioral symptoms that can occur immediately after abuse or trauma, the CAARE Center offers free (grant funded) counseling services for up to 120 days.

These services may include:

  • Individual counseling for children and adolescents
  • Group therapy
  • Family counseling
  • Community referrals and collaboration with community organizations
  • Parent education and support
  • School advocacy
  • Assistance in establishing a funding source in order to transition into long-term counseling services, if indicated
  • Services for individuals with disabilities and interpreting services

CHAT services are appropriate for children who have a history of abuse and exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Nightmares
  • Flashbacks
  • Irritability
  • Depression/Sadness
  • Poor Self-image
  • Toileting Accidents (e.g. nighttime, wetting, daytime soiling)
  • Anxiety/Fears
  • Sexualized Behaviors
  • Outbursts of Anger/Aggression
  • Difficulties in School
  • Problems with Siblings
  • Suicidal Thoughts or Self-Harm Behaviors
  • Passive or Withdrawn
  • Fire Setting
  • Drug or Alcohol Use
