July 27, 2015 - Dr. Hong Liu accompanied Dean Julie Freischlag to Shanghai, China.  The trip arose after members of the Shanghai Yangpu District invited UC Davis Health System to send a contingent to the area. The invitation was conveyed by the Bay Area Council, a business-sponsored, public policy advocacy organization for the nine-county Bay Area. UC Davis is a member of the Bay Area Council.

The Yangpu District is one of 19 districts in Shangai. The city is in a new era of development with an emphasis on science, and has a keen interest in collaborating with U.S. organizations, said Hong Liu, a UC Davis professor of anesthesiology who also is a member of the health system’s International Collaborations Advisory Committee. He accompanied Freischlag on the Shanghai visit.

According to Liu, there are several top hospitals in the Yangpu District that serve both local and international patients, and are interested in identifying areas where they could collaborate or receive advice from UC Davis.

Specific topics discussed by Freischlag and Liu, and their hosts, included:

•Telehealth and family medicine collaborations, including training and grand rounds
•Identifying hospitals interested in becoming proficient at treating thoracic outlet syndrome
•Establishing an international hospital in the Yangpu District, especially in assembling a management team and physician leaders
